Description

The Cancer Screening Panel – Female is a comprehensive blood test panel designed to measure key tumor markers that may provide valuable insights into potential cancer-related concerns in women. This panel analyzes specific proteins and antigens often associated with certain cancers, helping healthcare providers monitor for abnormalities, assess treatment response, or detect possible recurrence in high-risk individuals.Important Note: These tumor marker tests are not intended as standalone screening tools for the general population, as elevated levels can occur due to non-cancerous conditions (e.g., inflammation, benign diseases, or other factors). Results should always be interpreted by a qualified healthcare professional in conjunction with clinical history, symptoms, imaging, and other diagnostic tests. This panel is best used under medical guidance for monitoring known risks or following treatment.

Key Features:

  • Fasting Required: No
  • Specimen Type: Blood draw
  • Lab Partner: Quest Diagnostics
  • Results Availability: Tests typically run Monday–Friday; average report time is 4–5 days (turnaround is an estimate—delays may occur due to weather, holidays, confirmation testing, or lab maintenance)

Included Tests and Their Primary Associations:

  • CA 19-9 (Cancer Antigen 19-9) — Often elevated in advanced pancreatic cancer (about 70% of cases), as well as colorectal, lung, gallbladder, and other cancers. Non-cancer elevations can occur with bile duct obstruction (e.g., gallstones), pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, or liver disease.
  • CA 125 (Cancer Antigen 125) — A key marker associated with ovarian cancer cells; commonly used to monitor treatment response or detect recurrence in ovarian cancer patients. Not recommended for general screening due to elevations in benign conditions like menstruation, pregnancy, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, or other cancers (e.g., pancreatic, liver, colon, breast, endometrial, lung).
  • CA 15-3 (Cancer Antigen 15-3) — Primarily used to monitor breast cancer treatment response and detect recurrence. Elevations may also appear in lung, ovarian, endometrial, bladder, gastrointestinal cancers, or non-cancerous issues like liver disease (cirrhosis, hepatitis), lupus, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, or benign breast conditions.
  • Alpha Fetoprotein (AFP), Tumor Marker — Most relevant for monitoring nonseminomatous testicular cancer (though less common in female-specific contexts). Not recommended for general cancer screening in the population.
  • CEA (Carcinoembryonic Antigen) — A protein that may rise in colorectal cancer and other malignancies (e.g., medullary thyroid, breast, gastrointestinal, liver, lung, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate). Also elevated in non-cancerous situations like infections, liver cirrhosis, chronic smoking, or inflammatory bowel disease. Helpful for assessing prognosis, post-surgical recurrence, and therapy effectiveness.

This convenient blood-based panel offers a proactive way to evaluate multiple tumor markers in one test, supporting informed discussions with your doctor about cancer risk, early detection strategies, or ongoing monitoring. Always consult your healthcare provider to determine if this panel is appropriate for your individual health needs—early awareness combined with professional guidance is key to better outcomes.
