Fatigue | Low Energy | Decline in performance | Stress

In the domain of Fitness Performance, blood and hormone testing is a window inside the athlete’s body. It allows athletes to better understand their nutrition and performance by providing them with information on metabolic and hormonal imbalances, muscle oxygenation and energy availability and more.

Injury Risk Assessment

Prone to Injury? Unable to Train?

85% of musculoskeletal pain is referred from distressed organ.

What is the Difference?

How did it Occur?

  • An “Injury Event” Occurred?
    • Able to point to the same spot every time.
    • Same movement makes it hurt every time.
  • Insidious Progression of Pain and/or Weakness?
    • Uses broad sweeping hand – hurts somewhere around here.
    • Must do the “funky-chicken” moves to make it hurt again.

Increase Susceptibility to Injury

Risk for Overtraining Syndrome

Prone to Injury? Unable to Achieve Peak Performance?

Long Term Consequence of Visceral Stress & Dysfunction

How did it Occur?

  • Metabolic Dysfunction (Insulin Resistance)
    • RBC shed oxygen
    • Increased Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS)
    • Reduced glucose uptake
    • Low T (men) | High T (women)
  • Impaired Vasomotor Control of Blood Flow
    • Parasympathetic Withdrawal
    • Blood accumulation in abdomen unable to move to brain and muscles.
  • Loss of Blood / Nerve Reciprocity
    • Nerve Senescence
  • Mitochondrial Senescence
  • Muscle | Connective Tissue | Senescence

Medical vs. Functional Ranges

There are four main types of ranges in the field of blood chemistry analysis:

Medical Range

  • The Medical range is used to diagnose an existing disease.

Red Flag Range

  • The Red Flag range is a warning sign dysfunction is developing into disease.

Ominous Range

  • The Ominous range is a warning sign dysfunction has developed into disease (cancer).

Functional Range

  • The Functional Range is used to assess dysfunction before disease develops.

Blood tests have been a common diagnosis tool for over a century. Medical ranges use a bell-curve to determine “health”. Only the top and bottom 2 1/2 percent of a biomarker range is considered “sick”. Adding further insult to this. The percentage are not standardized. It is based upon the statistical average of the LOCAL POPULATION. What does your results look like if you live in one of the “Sickest” or “Healthiest” areas of the country. What if you move from one area to the other? You would go from “sick” to “healthy” or “healthy” to “sick” just by moving.

However, these tests are now becoming increasingly accessible to the consumer, and a large variety of Functional biomarkers ranges can now be used to analyze and applied specifically to optimize human performance.

Athletes need to perform to their best ability. With the advancement in technology, functional biomarkers are a great way to build this edge.

  • A simple blood analysis can produce very valuable data on the reactions that are occurring within the athlete’s body.
  • This kind of detail can allow trainers to better manage training and nutrition, assess stress levels and muscle status, identify deficiencies in the body and, overall, optimize the athlete’s performance and prevent injury].
  • Moreover, every athlete is different. Despite similar training regimes and diets, results can vary as genetic and environmental factors can cause athletes’ bodies to react differently. These differences need to be measured and taken into account especially when trying to optimize performance.

Biomarker Testing: A Window of Treatment Opportunity Inside the Athlete’s Body

A biomarker, (biological marker) is a measurable indicator of some biological state or condition. A biomarker can be an indicator of health, a distressed viscera, hormonal or immune system imbalance or clinical disease. Biomarkers are often measured and evaluated using blood, urine, or stool to examine normal biological processes, pathogenic processes, or pharmacologic responses.

In order to obtain a biomarker analysis, a sample needs to be taken and then analyzed. Based on the analysis, the appropriate changes need to be made to diet, training and lifestyle. Another test would be conducted three to five months after in order to determine if these changes have created a chemical impact within the body. Therefore, this process needs to be constantly adjusted in order to ensure all levels are maintained to peak performance level.
